When looking at the bridge, pay attention to its unique design. The Mathematical Bridge is made entirely out of straight pieces of wood, yet it forms an arched shape without the use of nails or bolts. The bridge's design is based on mathematical principles, specifically the use of tangential arcs to create an even load distribution. The bridge was originally built in 1749 by William Etheridge, a local carpenter who apparently was very good at mathematics and geometry!

Iconic bridge that everyone locally knows and is reputed to have been built by Sir Isaac Newton, even though he'd been dead 20 years before it was erected! Another common myth is that it has no bolts or screws holding it together, which is not true. When originally built, the fixings were wooden pegs, long since replaced with metal bolts! No curved pieces of wood, though, to form the natural arch.

The mathematical bridge is a wooden bridge designed by Isaac Newton they say. It can be viewed from the bridge on Silver Street (public street) any time of the day and any time of the year. However, if Queens College is open for visitors, you can pay a few pounds to visit the college and walk on to the bridge yourself! That's fun. You also get a good view punting.
