Sapporo is one of the nicest cities in Japan, and one of the youngest. I am a foreign resident here and I can attest to this. It is unique in that it has a different feel to other cities in Japan (Hokkaido as a whole feels very different to the rest of Japan). There are notably less temples and shrines and a bit more of a European influence due to the western scholars who were brought in to construct the city and who also established Hokkaido University, one of the most famous in Japan being one of the Imperial universities. Sapporo City is very easy to get around, almost entirely flat and not too crowded. I recommend renting a bike from Eki-Chari cycles at the station. Sapporo also has quite a large young population (due to the university and the desire of many young Japanese to escape the hustle and bustle of Japan's heavily populated mainland cities) and this gives the city character especially for young adult travelers. It's clean, and a mix of modern and old, with a great food scene and lots of really neat, affordable and well managed guest houses and budget accommodation for travelers. personally, I could live here!
It is a bit rural compared to Sapporo but it din reduce the friendliness from the local. They r trying their very best to help us in everything and their seafood is quite affordable and very fresh compared to some other places in Hokkaido.
Sapporo is a beautiful place during winter though it can be really cold. Shopping comparing some of the exact items we saw in Sapporo and Tokyo, Sapporo is cheaper. There are many places to just explore and enjoy like the Hokkaido University that is beautiful! Otaru is another wonderful place to go for the day or if u have time, 2-3 days. Something different that you don’t usually find it elsewhere. Nice to go to the Sapporo Wholesale Market for some fresh seafood but it is probably overpriced since it is touristy. At least explore it once. 😁
Sapporo is a perfect place for winterwonderland especially in February for the Snow Festival (expect hotels to be fully booked though). Mt. Moiwa is a nice place to see the cityscape. And the city is a heaven for good food as well: Soup Curry, Seafood (in Nijo Market), Hokkaido ramen, etc. The food souvenirs in Hokkaido have endless variety too- I would recommend Shiroi Koibito and Royce.
Yet another big Japanese city with lots of modern buildings and a lack of personality. Take a car/train/bus and travel the rest of Hokkaido for some true wonders.
Sapporo is a great place to visit if you want to experience another part of Japan. We’ve been to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and other cities on the main island but Hokkaido was always on our bucket list. Aside from the Snow Festival, the highlight of our trip was the Sapporo Beer Factory at night. Beautiful site and spacious grounds with many buildings housing the original factory , eating facilities and shops. The museum was fascinating with many displays educating visitors about the history of the beer. We ate at one of the Mongolian style restaurants , ordering lamb and seafood grilled at our table. Another highlight was a 30 minutes train ride to Odori Canal, a coastal town with a rich history. If you like king crab this was the place to go. We selected a live crab at the Senkaku Seafood Market and had it cooked for us. So delicious. Sapporo’s Nijo Market was another treat. Fresh scallops, oysters and sea urchins grilled as you wait and eaten at the seafood vendor’s stand. Purchased dried scallops at decent price at this market. Many Daiso stores to purchase bargain items. Sapporo soft serve ice cream is so smooth and despite the cold weather, we enjoyed it several times during our stay.
Interesting history, especially in light of end of feudalism. Worhwhile to explore unique international background. Easy to get around by Public transport. Loved taking cablecar at night to view the city, enjoyed Botanical Gardens and Museum of People of Hokkaido and Hakodate.
Cheaper accommodations then sapporo. Convenient access to major rail lines, and the airport. Good base for Hokkaido exploration.
Nice wee town and introduction to Hokkaido. Loved high tea at the British Consulate. The museum of northern people’s was beautiful. The produce in Hokkaido is just incredible definitely visit the morning market!
Sapporo is the attractive city that every visitor should visit. Beautiful nuture, nice weather, good transportation, nice people and very fresh seafood as well as many cultural places. From Sapporo the visitors can easily travel by the JR to other cities in Hokkaido.
Asahikawa
Uniquely local. We got to stay in a local, Hokkaido Japanese house. Very clean. Full kitchen. We picked up some breakfast items from a convenience.store nearby and cooked in the kitchen. We had a big triple room. We also had a long chat with the host. The house is very nicely, artistically decorated, Hokkaido style, reminding me of the frontier spirit back in wild Wyoming/Montana. The Budget rental car is just across the street, very convenient for us to pick up the rental car in the morning. Thank you, Chi, for taking care of us.
Noboribetsu
The onsens are exceptional and the location could not be better. It basically overlooks Hell Valley. The bedding in the traditional Japanese rooms are really comfortable. Also, the staff are above and beyond helpful! The manager helped us to get a bus to Niseko as our next destination after we were stressing so badly about having to backtrack for hours on a train (Noboribetsu to Niseko can be tricky). If anyone would like to know it's called the Hokkaido Resort Liner! THANKS DAI ICHI TAKIMOTOKAN :D
Noboribetsu
Loved the resort and onsen. The outdoor bath was incredible and we loved the private bath in our room. The hotel is kept very clean, but the private bath in our room had quite a bit of mold everywhere. For such an upscale resort, I was surprised that part wasn't kept cleaner. Walkable to Noboribetsu's major sights--Jigoku Dani and the bear park. We wanted a classic Hokkaido onsen town experience, and Noboribetsu Grand Hotel and this cute little mountain town delivered!
Though an older building this hotel is very clean, well maintained, and the rooms are spacious. The staff are very helpful and excel at what they do. Their breakfast buffet is an awesome option to start the morning with. Will definitely stay here again when we come to Hokkaido. Laundry room has single washer/dryer designed for single loads. Laundry soap automatically dispensed (included). It lets you know what state the washer/dryer is in your room tv. 🙂
In the middle of Susukino, Sapporos entertainment district, you are going to have pretty much a chain hotel experience like any APA Hotel. I liked that - beds are comfortable, TV works great, shower is extremely big. Yet it's very comfortable and nicely priced so I'd definitely book again. Hotel staff was extremely nice, competent and always helped. We made a 5 day Hokkaido tour and were able to leave our big luggage at the hotel for a small fee.
Location is great, plenty of restaurants around and if hotel parking full plenty of close by options to park car (cheap). The Izakaya inside the same building at corner is awesome. Best staff vere - so friendly. Had great time there. The rooms are Japanese standard size but very modern and comfortable. We wished to have had this kind of room all over Hokkaido. Bedding fantastic and bathroom great too. New, modern, clean, stylish....we loved it!
Hakodate
Milion dollar view from the hotel lobby and room at the Pacific Ocean/Japanese sea. Private onsen (hot spring water) in the wooden tube on balcony. Public onsen for man/woman. Japanese style accommodation. Staff and service. Location in the northern island - Hokkaido (great in summer heats of Japan) with an easy access to beautiful city of Hakodate. Only 4 hours (860 km) by bullet train Hayabusa (Shinkansen) from the Tokyo Station.
Hakodate
This was our first time visiting Hokkaido, wanted to experience traditional Japanese style accommodation, this place didn’t disappoint us , the whole facility is really nice and clean, it has being decorated very well by the owner. In addition, the owner is very kind and warm, we have talked a lot even we didn’t understand each very well, she had given us a small dedicated gift before we left. Hope we have chance come here again!
Obihiro
Full serviced kitchenette for cooking- so easy to buy from supermarket and enjoy fresh produce (which is what Hokkaido is all about) We had everything we could ever need, no need to bring your toothbrush! Japanese hospitality was top notch and accomodating. The room was very comfortable, we had space to ourselves to relax after a long day. The house was situated in a quiet neighbourhood, so it was easy to get in and out.
The location of this hotel was great, close to restaurants in a quiet area. This hotel is very new so everything was clean and modern and smelled new and fresh. The breakfast was great with a lot of options, even Hokkaido ice cream if you want it. Although the hotel parking lot was small and was often full, there is another gravel lot just adjacent to the hotel that was always available so we had no problems parking.
Shintoku
Even though I was the only guest, the host Nemoto-san took great care of me. He told me all about the local area, recommended some good events, and even shared a sampler of some amazing Japanese whiskies! We spent most of the night talking about various travels, and it was a great time. In the morning, I had a delightful breakfast of local Hokkaido produce and even a packed lunch of delicious breads!
Teshikaga
The owners were amazing and helped a lot with possibilities to visit around the area and all of Hokkaido. Not only did the owner speak really good English for Japan, his wife was also very eager learning each day and getting better. It was really great being able to exchange so much with locals. Highly recommended. Also the food was absolutely amazing and I was struggling to eat all of it.
The free buffet breakfast did not compromise in the quality and varieties of food served. It was tasty and a good spread including salad, rice ,porridge, soup, various Japanese dishes, a few types of bread, juices, milk and sweet wine made from Hokkaido rice. The drinks dispenser has coffee, mocha and hot chocolate which was very nice.
This was the best hotel from our trip to Hokkaido. The room was big and comfortable. The breakfast room had a great view of the valley covered in snow, and the breakfast food had a great variety. There was also wine tasting at reception, parking and free laundry facilities. The staff was very nice and made our stay great!
Very good, cost-effective hotel in central Sapporo. Excellent location close to the Sapporo JR Railway Station. Plenty of retail amenities in the area and easy public transport options to get to more distant attractions in Sapporo and beyond in Hokkaido. Complementary breakfast and choice of pillows in the main lobby.
Kami-furano
Breakfast was a good mix of Japanese and Western foods, and included both coffee and tea. The onsen with rust-colored waters are well worth using, especially the outdoor baths. This is the highest elevation ryokan and onsen in Hokkaido, so it's a unique experience. The dinner also exceeded our expectations.
Breakfast is excellent with good quality of food and selections. Staff were very helpful. The hotel is located at a very convenient location with range of restaurants and shopping areas within walking distance. We were disappointed with the size of the room which is quite small for Hokkaido standard.
Amy and Dani were so kind, generous, and helpful to our group of 5 when we stayed. They gave us restaurant and onsen recommendations, helped us make a reservation for us non-Japanese speakers, and were just friendly people to talk to about life in Hokkaido. Plus, it's right next store to a 711!
Explanations in English were helpful. Nice store for Hokkaido omiyage. The store clerk Saturday evening was helpful. The hotel lobby has very nice tables and chairs. I was able to continue my work at a lobby table after checking out. The room desk, light and desk chair were nice and useful.
Best breakfast among many other hotels in Japan! They use Hokkaido local ingredients made the high quality cuisine. We chose the package with lounge access, the canapes are of excellent quality, selection of beverage is lovely. A very enjoyable experience and will surely coming again!
