If it wasn't for the restaurant within the Carlos Gardel hotel, ten minutes from the town center by taxi and one of the best on all accounts thus far in Uruguay, I'd say Tacuarembo isn't much more than a hub for travelers. A few shops, banks, cafeterias, including one with a salad buffet and parilla (BBQ), an ice-cream parlor, a casino (slot machines only), a cathedral and taxi ranks on the main square. That's about it, except for friendly people and basic services. No fancy restaurant in town, no actual espresso (they use some coffee made in Argentina that tastes like chicoree), no signs of life in the evening. Dead as a rural town can be, except when banks open and the locals line-up to withdraw cash, sometimes under heavy police protection when tempers flare.
