Veliko Tarnovo was a pleasant surprise for me, some friends propose it to me as a city break a while ago and I have to admit that what I found there was a bit above my expectation. Deployed on a hill, narrow streets paved with stone, very well preserved traditional buildings, a Balkanic architecture with oriental influences, a time travel over the past century allowed me to live for a moment the life of the former Bulgarian capital. Arbanasi, a small traditional village located 2 miles away from Veliko Tarnovo offers an impressive view of Veliko’s hills including the city, accommodation in traditional Bulgarian houses is available here for reasonable prices. During my stay I choose Premier Hotel located in the heart of Veliko Tarnovo, reason for that being mainly the location which allows us easy access to the historical city and clubs located in the central part of the town. Night life is pretty animated for a small town as Veliko is, people from Balkan region now very well how to enjoy their life, also because Velioko is one of the main touristic attractions of Bulgaria there are plenty of clubbing options available from techno music to alternative or underground and let’s not forget about the Bulgarian pop-folk style called Chalga which is very popular. We ended up in a place called Tequila, I would rate is as an alternative bar with very friendly people and great shots. Party experience I will rate as great, I met very nice people there from Portugal, Mexico, France, Norway and locals, from artist to entrepreneurs; we had constructive discussion enjoying the party, they make me feel as being between old friends.

Please consider not only Tsarevets, but the Holy Forty...
Please consider not only Tsarevets, but the Holy Forty Martyrs church, St Peter and Pavel church, Arbanasi and around: Dryanovo and Dryanovo monastery, Etara, Nicopolis ad Istrum, Hotnitsa waterfall, the Ancient Ceramic Center close to Pavlikeni and many other. The region has pretty much to offer in only one hour drive from Veliko Tarnovo. If you don't have a taxi, you could use either public transportation or taxi services.

The main attraction of Veliko Tarnovo is the Tsarevets fortress which is big and interesting with great views and light show in the evening. It is easy to get around the viry by foot but in the nearby small villages there are interesting places too.

Veliko Tarnovo este un orasel foarte frumos si cochet, in care se merita sa mergi cel putin o data. Noi am fost de 4 ori :). Recomand cu caldura sa fie vizitat, atat el cat si imprejurimile, canionul Hotnisa cu cascada Kaya Bunar si canionul Emen, pestera Bacho Kero, manastirea Dryanovo, orasul Tryavna si altele.

It s too bad the people are not very nice and there is a real issue with parking, and the people who represent the authorities and should help are there just to give you an attitude, be unpolite and "rob" u, instead of giving solutions. Veliko tarnovo is a great place, except for the people:(

A nice place to stay. Easy parking. Lots of facilities, cheaper and with easy access to Veliko Tarnovo. Fortress light show and grounds were stunning and low cost. Old Town well worth a tour. Gorna was closest to where I was working, on a village house that I recently bought.

Been to the Bolyarski Hotel before and the Location is excellent. Fantastic views to the rear of the property. Food at the hotel is good and had some music to dance to on one night which was a pleasant surprise. Once your there you can walk to most places and there is lots to see and do. This part of Bulgaria is more up market than most and there seems to be an influx of people investing in buying property around and within easy reach of Veliko Tarnovo/Turnovo in places like Dryanovo and Gostilitsa the scenery is breathtaking, very varied with the hills and mountains. Lots of crops are grown and I have never seen such an expanse of grape vines. There is a wonderful Restaurant in the old part of Veliko Turnovo called the 1858 Han Hadji Nikoli Inn it is also a museum and art gallery. A walk to the Castle is worth a trip and you can get a guided tour of Veliko Turnovo which gives you all the history. The shopping is good and a look in the food market at the excellent quality of their fresh fruit and vegetables is interesting if you are a foodie. Everything is very reasonably priced in Bulgaria making it good value.
