The volcano is a totally unique life highlight experience. Tanna itself is very quaint and basic esp post cyclone pam but there is heaps to do and its absolutely wonderful.
The volcano at Mt Yasur was definitely the highlight of our Vanuatu trip. Being at such close proximity to bubbling lava and the rim of the volcano was a big thrill. The intensity of the roar of the volcano and gusts of volcanic ash covering us contributed to an incredible experience. At one point a huge piece of molten lava came hurtling out of the volcano towards us, going several metres over our heads to land below us down the side of the volcano. The road to the volcano could not have been in worse condition. Giant pot holes meant that it took 2 hours to get 35 kms however it is a very rewarding experience, one we will never forget. We also went to the kustom village Yakel, featured in the film 'Tanna". I would also recommend doing either this village or there is one other similar one. A representative of the tribe showed us around, we went swimming with them under the waterfall, drank kava with them and watched them dance for us. Lots of photo opportunities. We would've liked to see the Blue Cave but each day we were there the sea was too rough for the boat to go out. We saw a giant Banyan tree which cost about AU$90 for the 1 hour trip from the main town which certainly wasn't worth a fraction of that price. We both felt 5 days on Tanna Island was slightly long and 3-4 would've been just right. Even just going for the 2-day, 1-night package from Port Vila would be worth it as the volcano is such a great experience.
You need to take cash and plenty of it as there are no atm facilities on the island. Tours are all expensive especially the banyan tree. Yasur volcanoes was an amazing spectacle, worth the effort. The Blue Hole has good snorkelling and has a reasonable entry fee. Only one or two restaurants in the local town but unfortunately they seem to finish cooking after lunch. Most tourist eat at their hotels. Local buses ply the main road but most tourist are having to use tours to go anywhere on the island, this can be quite expensive. Maybe 3 days is long enough on Tanna island.
Highly recommend Tanna to all visitors to Vanuatu. Amazing cultural experience getting to know local tribes and the way they live. Volcano tour is a MUST! Starring at mother Earth's boiling core and watching volcanic eruption happen right in front of your eyes is absolutely scary, but also an amazing experience! Do prepare for extremely bumpy roads and remote lifestyle.
Wonderful! Hips of events can do at Tanna Island. The most important event is Yasur Volcano tour!
Lankourou
Phillip and Suzanne made me feel at home as I relaxed into a brief experience of real Tanna village life. The property is off grid and draws water from a volcanic spring. The name of the property is not an exaggeration! You can see the glow of Mount Yasur from the tree house on some nights and periodically hear the eruptions throughout the day and night. Even though you are close to the volcano, the property is set in lush gardens and experienced only a tiny bit of ash fall one morning when I was there and the wind changed.
