Facing the seafront in Kota Belud, Bigfin beach resort features a private beach area. Offering a restaurant, the property also has a garden. The property provides sea views and a terrace. Super lovely local crew, awesome food (thanks Awieee), great diving - the accommodation is remote and basic, but you will finally get a chance to unwind and enjoy nature here. I had an amazing time. I hope I will be back one day.

Situated amidst abundant greenery, Sepilok Nature Lodge - Formerly known as Sepilok Nature Resort is a haven for nature lovers. I was astounded when we arrived. it’s pretty big complex, but done amazingly well: all wooden elements, batik accents, beautifully maintained. the common spaces are a pleasure to stroll around and the room itself was spacious, clean, with nice decor, huge bathroom and additional bathtub. loved it! on top of that the staff was helpful and kind, food and drinks were delicious and very reasonably priced

Great little spot in a jungle neighborhood. Super friendly owners. We were hungry when we arrived and they were making chicken curry for their lunch, and added us to the preparations. Very unique location. I slept really well then off the next day for diving.

Set within the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park off the coast of Borneo, Gaya Island offers elegant villas with panoramic views of the South China Sea and the rainforest. The place is really pleasant. Near the coast, just 15 minutes from Kota Kinabalu, actually. But one feels so far from KK.

Sepilok Forest Edge Resort is a nature retreat in Sandakan, a 15-minute walk from the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. This is an absolutely fantastic property and resort. It is true to its name: it is at the edge of the forest and one of the further-removed properties in the area, if not the furthest. The staff is extremely responsive and will help you arrange anything that you wish to arrange in the area. I stayed in one of the basic chalets (so one step up above the dormitories) and it was amazing. If you have the money and it is at all possible, skip the dormitory and get the chalet. Yes, it's a price jump, but absolutely worth it. Spotlessly clean, drinking water upon request, wonderful private deck that I was obsessed with. Restaurant is top-notch. Air-con, which is a huge thing in Borneo. You should definitely follow their recommendations and make sure that you have a slip-off pair of shoes since you'll be walking between your accomodations and the restaurant pavillion frequently. Staff is extremely friendly. Anything that's within reason you ask for, you will get.
