The ryokan features family rooms. The staff was very kind, as expected from a family owned ryokan. The bath area is small, but you schedule your personal bath time. Takamiya Ryokan Miyamaso

Zaō Onsen

Located within a 10-minute walking distance from the Zao Sky Cable aerial lift, Miyamaso Takamiya features 9 natural hot spring baths for guests to enjoy. The wooden structure of the property portrays a traditional Japanese-style accommodation. Free Wi-Fi is available at the lobby. Very nice, traditional experience! We were very surprised with the diversity of the breakfast. If you want to experience a proper Japanese breakfast, here is one place where you can do that very well. The onsen was very pleasant too, but you might need to get accustomed to the temperature. All in all we had a very pleasant stay here and we can definitely recommend! Thanks a lot :)

Tsukasaya Ryokan

Yutagawa Onsen, Tsuruoka

Tsukaya Ryokan is a accommodation with a history of over 300 years. All rooms feature tatami (woven-straw) floors.

Guests can enjoy meals and sake rice wine in a private dining room, or have a soak in the hot spring bath on site, boasting free flowing spring water retrieved directly from the spring source. Of all the hotels and ryokans I stayed at during my two weeks traveling Japan, the night at Tsukasaya Ryokan was by far my favorite. Mrs. Shoji personally came out and greeted me at my taxi. From that moment onward, I felt as if I was receiving an experience personalized just for me. After showing me to my room, Mrs. Shoji informed me of several local attractions (parks, shrines, temples, etc.) that were lovely to visit prior to returning for dinner. Every moment of the stay felt thoughtfully crafted and authentic. The food was delicious, containing many dishes that I had never before experienced. The onsen, while small and enclosed, was at just the right temperature and left my skin feeling the best it has in years. The design of the structure was charming and authentic (as best that a foreigner like myself can judge). The staff were friendly and accommodating.

Each accommodation at the 4-star ryokan has mountain views, and guests can enjoy access to a hot spring bath and a spa centre. The ryokan features rooms with air conditioning, free private parking and free WiFi. I booked room 318 and it was great. The Onsen with the cypress bath smelled great and the water was awesome. The dinner was brought to the room and is a contender for the best meal I had in Japan. The attendant, who brought the meal, was very friendly and we had a nice chat. Thank you for the card with the well-wishes at checkout.
